The Rush Starts Before the Cold

It started every year around the middle of August.
I was the service dispatcher for a large HVAC and mechanical company, and the first calls would begin coming in from customers wanting to schedule preventive maintenance. At first, there were only a few.
By September, there were more.
Then the nights started getting colder. The leaves changed. Heating systems were turned on for the first time in months—and suddenly, everyone remembered their preventive maintenance at once.
The phones rang constantly. Service requests piled up, and every available place on the schedule disappeared almost as quickly as we could find it.
Then the no-heat calls started.
Now, customers trying to schedule planned maintenance were competing for space with people whose heating systems had already stopped working. The maintenance backlog grew longer and longer.
By the beginning of November, we usually reached the same point. Our service manager would tell me, “That’s it. If they aren’t already a preventive-maintenance customer, we can’t get them scheduled until after the first of the year.”
We would still take their information and add them to the queue if they were willing to wait. Some did. Many called another company and hoped to find an earlier opening.
The interesting thing was that preventive maintenance had not suddenly become necessary in September or October. The weather had simply reminded everyone to call at the same time.
That was the real beginning of the preventive maintenance rush.
The maintenance itself isn’t seasonal. The rush to schedule it is.
