Is Your A/C Really Ready for What It Has Already Been Through This Summer?

Nothing was wrong with the truck while it sat in the driveway.
Of course there wasn’t. It was sitting in the driveway doing absolutely nothing.
It started. It idled smoothly. The gauges looked normal. Fantastic. It had successfully completed the difficult task of sitting still.
Then someone hooked a loaded trailer to it and headed up a Colorado mountain pass.
Now we were going to learn something.
Because the truck’s real job was not idling peacefully in the driveway. Its real job was pulling that load uphill.
Your air conditioner is not much different.
We can turn it on during a mild morning and watch it run for a few minutes. That can tell us some things.
But right now, it is hot outside. Your A/C wants to come on. It has already spent weeks pulling heat out of your house through long afternoons, dust, pollen, debris and whatever else summer has thrown at it.
This is its natural state. It is doing the actual job it was installed to do.
Let it show us how it is performing.
We can watch it start and run under a real cooling load. We can check airflow, temperature changes, operating pressures, electrical components, coils, filters and condensate drainage while the system is actually participating in the test.
If you are concerned that it is still peak A/C season and you need the equipment operating at full capacity, that is not a reason to postpone preventive maintenance. In many ways, it makes this a very useful time to check it.
We are not waiting for the A/C to stop working so we can confirm that it stopped working. That would be regular service with much worse timing.
Your A/C is also probably not the only mechanical equipment serving the property.
It may be working like it has something to prove while your boiler or furnace sits in the mechanical room feeling pretty confident about not being needed.
Preventive maintenance should account for the complete mechanical system, including the A/C, boiler, furnace, heat pump, radiant system, snowmelt equipment and whatever else is responsible for keeping the property comfortable.
